Anafi

There is unique flora and fauna and numerous archeological sites to see.
Anafi is located at the southeastern edge of the Cycladic chain of islands with Santorini (Thera) being the nearest island neighbor.
The name “Anafi” (emerge in Greek) originates in antiquity, from the seductive Argonaut tale. As the Argonauts were on their way home from Colchis they fell into a terrible storm. Jason in desperation raised his arms to the skies and prayed Apollo for help. The gorgeous god of poetry and music shot an arrow in front of their ship and immediately everything around them calmed and cleared. A small island “emerged” in their view and the Argonauts went ashore in safety. The island was named Anafi because it appeared to “emerge” through the waves and consequently Apollo was worshiped locally as the Emergent or Shiner. |
